Halfway through August

We are half way through one of the traditionally hottest months here in the state of Florida. We're also 44 days away from the "official first day of Fall" on September 23rd. However, we are only 15 days away from my big Fall transition in my home.

I say we enjoy the last few days of summer. We know that cooler weather, falling leaves, and pumpkin everything is on the way, but let's enjoy all the freedom that is summer for just a little bit longer.

Fitness

Since it is the hottest time of the year right now, let's focus on heat exercise safety. Yes, you can definitely still exercise outside when it's insanely hot out. But the heat makes it much harder on your body. Add humidity on top of that, and you really need to pay attention to your bodies signals. It is insanely easy to literally, actually factually die from simply being in the heat. If you're not used to exercising/being in the heat, don't just jump right in. You need to slowly adapt to it.

Make sure you stay hydrated. Your body will be sweating out so much of your liquids. It's important to remember that in extra high heat, you're not just sweating out water, you're also sweating out vital electrolytes. You absolutely must replenish them as well! Shoot for 8 ounces of liquids before heading out the door, and another 8 ounces every 20 minutes you're exercising, this includes just walking. However, don't overdo it, because you can get sick from being drinking too much water as well. Check your toilet if you're unsure, you're shooting for a super light yellow color. Too dark and you're dehydrated, too light and you're overhydrated.

Look for lightweight workout gear that is "moisture-wicking". This will pull the sweat away from you skin. Also, I know it may seem weird, but you do want to have a lightweight clothing item on covering skin. It will help keep your body temperature down. Sunlight directly beaming on the skin will increase your core temperature.

Listen to your body. It is pretty great at telling you to stop. If you start to get a headache, or feel shaky in any way, get out of the sunlight and cool yourself down.

Nutrition

When I think summer, I think about the beach. When I think about the beach, I think about fresh delicious seafood. Fish is pretty darn good for you, too. It's loaded with vitamins and minerals that are difficult to get anywhere else. It's a great protein source and has Omega-3 fatty acids which are important for brain function. With the increased use of sunscreen, a lot of the population is Vitamin D deficient. In comes healthy fantastic fish, a single serving provides a full day's worth!

Some studies have shown that fish helps prevent heart problems and slow the rates of mental decline.

And of course, I like the fact that is is fairly easy to prepare fish. Here are some quick and simple, delicious ways to prepare fish. Pair these recipes with some veggies, or a nice green salad, and ta-da you have a quick light dinner for a hot night!

Mind Body Connection

BIG NEWS!!! I've officially started my 200 hour yoga teacher training!!! I am so super duper excited! Yoga is such a huge part of me. Through the practice of yoga, I have learned so much about myself.

As always, I strongly suggest that everyone look inward. Whether it is through moving meditation such

as yoga, or Tai Chi, or through journaling or just meditation. It is important to be true to yourself. However, you cannot be true to yourself if you don't truly know yourself. Take some time and enjoy your self discovery!

Love and peace to everyone,

Kris
